ABBA T. MAKAMA


Abba T. Makama is an award-winning filmmaker and visual artist from Nigeria. His debut film, "Green White Green," had its world premiere in 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Since then, it has screened at over 20 international film festivals, including the Stockholm International Film Festival, Berlin Critics' Week, and Carthage Film Festival. The film was distributed worldwide on Netflix and Canal Plus.

His sophomore "The Lost Okoroshi" also premiered at TIFF 2019 and subsequently screened at BFI London Film Festival and The Berlin Critics Week 2020. "The Lost Okoroshi" was released on Netflix in 2020. Abba is a co-founding member of the Surreal 16 collective and S16 Film Festival. The S16 collective released their anthology film, "Juju Stories," which won the Boccalino D'oro Award for Best Film at Locarno 2021. It was released on Amazon Prime Video in 2022. His films have been reviewed and featured in publications such as The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, The New York Times, and IndieWire.

His work as visual artist is heavily inspired by film and storytelling, where he uses mixed media to explore themes like pop culture, fashion, and religion. These themes are most often explored through a parody or satirical lens. He also has a deep interest in the study of Dreams and is a Jungian Psychology enthusiast.

JUJU STORIES (2022)

"Juju Stories" is an anthology film consisting of three stories that explore supernatural beliefs in Nigerian culture. Each segment delves into the eerie consequences of dabbling in dark magic, from love spells gone wrong to mysterious curses, blending horror with folklore in a contemporary setting.

THE LOST OKOROSHI (2019)

"The Lost Okoroshi" (2019) follows Raymond, a disillusioned security guard in Lagos, who mysteriously transforms into an Okoroshi, an ancestral masquerade spirit. As he navigates this new identity, the film explores the clash between tradition and modernity in a surreal, darkly comedic way.

GREEN WHITE GREEN (2016)

"Green White Green" (2016) is a coming-of-age comedy that follows three young Nigerian men from different ethnic backgrounds as they spend their final weeks before university creating a short film. Through their creative journey, the film humorously explores Nigeria's cultural diversity and the complexities of national identity.
